چکیده

Magnetotactic bacteria navigate along geomagnetic field lines. By tt is means they find and stay in their preferred habitat and avoid the toxic effects of oxygen. Cells contain single-magnetic-domain Fe304 particles which are resporsible for their magnetotactic response. Numerous Fe 0 particle organized in (hains have recently been found in eukaryotic cells, edglenoid, motile, magnetot ctlc algae of the genus Anisonema.

Magnetite and magnetotaxis in algae.

Magnetotactic algae of the genus Anisonema (Euglenophyceae) have been isolated from a coastal mangrove swamp in northeastern Brazil. The magnetotactic response is based on a permanent magnetic dipole moment per cell approximately 7 10(-10) emu. Each cell contains many magnetite (Fe(3)O(4)) particles organized in chains.

Critical superparamagnetic/single-domain grain sizes in interacting magnetite particles: implications for magnetosome crystals.

Magnetotactic bacteria contain chains of magnetically interacting crystals (magnetosome crystals), which they use for navigation (magnetotaxis). To improve magnetotaxis efficiency, the magnetosome crystals (usually magnetite or greigite in composition) should be magnetically stable single-domain (SSD) particles. Smaller single-domain particles become magnetically unstable owing to thermal fluct...

Magnetite and magnetotaxis in microorganisms.

Magnetotactic bacteria from freshwater and marine sediments orient and navigate along geomagnetic field lines. Their magnetotactic response is based on intracellular, single magnetic domains of ferrimagnetic magnetite, which impart a permanent magnetic dipole moment to the cell.

Navigational Compass in Magnetic Bacteria R. B. Frankel

Several species of bacteria from both fresh water and marine enviornments were observed to orient and swim in a preferred direction in the geomag netic field (magnetotaxis) [1, 2J. Kalmijn and Blakemore [2] observed that most of the magneto tactic bacteria in sediments oriented and swam along magnetic field lines toward the north. Rever sal of the ambient magnetic field with Helmholtz coils ...

North-Seeking Magnetotactic Gammaproteobacteria in the Southern Hemisphere.

UNLABELLED Magnetotactic bacteria (MTB) comprise a phylogenetically diverse group of prokaryotes capable of orienting and navigating along magnetic field lines. Under oxic conditions, MTB in natural environments in the Northern Hemisphere generally display north-seeking (NS) polarity, swimming parallel to the Earth's magnetic field lines, while those in the Southern Hemisphere generally swim an...
